Literature Text

PANEL 1.

(Split panel. One half shows Charlene busy in her duties as a cashier, the other shows Skids shooting a weapon in the middle of a firefight. The text should be in italics, or otherwise show that it's not "normal" dialogue.)

CHARLENE'S LYRICS: I'm so tired of the slow routine, up to town on the 8:15...

SKIDS' LYRICS: You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'...?

PANEL 2.

(Another split panel. One half shows Charlene sitting by the store she works at, looking bored and downhearted. The other half shows Skids tucked into a corner or alley, trying to hide from the firefight and take a moment to gather his thoughts.)

LYRICS: There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air wait for us, somewhere...

PANEL 3.

(We see Charlene's idea of the perfect life - her dolled up as a cowgirl or debutante in a typical Wild Western scene.)

LYRICS: You may talk about your Clementine and sing of Rosa Lee, but the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me...

PANEL 4.

(And then Skids' idea of a good life - being in the audience while Blaster and Soundwave (and possibly their cassettes, if they fit) are holding a rock concert.)

LYRICS: Over on the corner, there's a happy noise - people come from all around to watch the magic boys...

PANEL 5:

(Now things get a little crazy... we see another Wild Western scene, but this has a mix of typical Western denizens (including Charlene), but also Transformers (both Autobot and Decepticon) dolled up in similar Western garb (including Skids).)

LYRICS: When I caught your eye, I saw you break into a grin, it feels so good feelin' good again...

PANEL 6.

(Here we see Skids' POV, Charlene and her cowboys still in their gear, but sitting in a Cybertronian bar with Skids and patrons in their normal look - again, both Autobots and Decepticons.)

LYRICS: Always a chance we'll meet somebody to foot the bill, then the drinks are on the house...

PANEL 7.

(Split panel of a young fellow - one side shows him looking like a Wild West sort, but the other side shows who he really is - an attendant at a toll booth. The text from here on should be "normal".)

BOOTH ATTENDANT: That'll be $3.50 for the toll, Miss.

PANEL 8.

(We see a closeup of Charlene dropping the money into the attendant's hand.)

CHARLENE: Here you go.

PANEL 9.

(We see Skids in car mode about to drive off down a road stretching out into the horizon. Charlene should be sticking her head out the driver-side window (possibly holding her hat down on her head). If there's room, we should see the attendant waving after them from his booth.)

CHARLENE: So, Skids... where should we go now?

SKIDS: Anywhere you can dream of, Charlene... anywhere we can dream of.
Finished Mosaic:

(There are handy links to YouTube vids in the deviation for those of you who haven't heard the songs in question before.)

Whoo! Another one of my :icontransformers-mosaic: scripts in the queue finally gets to see the light of day. :D

It's funny, this one started out quite differently. It originally was a dialogue-less piece with Skids alone, driving around having various daydreams blending Earth elements with a Cybertron at peace, before being brought back to reality just in time to avoid a collision or traffic ticket or the like.

But eh, I was having trouble thinking up enough good ideas for daydreams, and it felt a bit too repetitive in my head since it was a rather one-note concept being copied to several panels.

So then I decided to add in Charlene, and turned it into a sort of sharing of daydreams between them, which let me have more of a progression/variety going on. But then I felt the idea might be a little empty without dialogue after all.

That made me have to think about what dialogue would fit without breaking the mood of the daydreaming. Which eventually led to me hitting on using song lyrics, since song lyrics have always had something of an inherently daydreamy quality to me.

...and then I looked at the result that had formed in my head, realized that I had gone and written a (somewhat) romantic songfic with complete seriousness, and threw it in my mind's rubbish bin in embarrassment.

And there it might have stayed if a discussion with ~pietrestan about another project hadn't led to me mentioning this idea, and he ended up liking it after all and asked to try and draw it. How could I say no?

I still feel faintly embarrassed/silly about the whole thing, but I can't argue with how pretty Pietre made the end result look. He really knocked it out of the park for me, and I think his style is about the most perfect match for this kind of idea that I could find. I love all the little easter eggs and details he added too, even if I had to give him special forgiveness for a New York Yankees hat. ;)

Trying to find suitable lyrics was interesting; I wanted to have it where both the sound bite I picked and the whole song were appropriate to each panel. I decided while plotting out the Mosaic to make the very last bit of it use "real world" dialogue to make it more clear that most of the Mosaic was daydreams. But if I'd made the last panel lyrics after all, I probably would have used: "If you're going my way, I want to drive it all night long..."
